Base44 Review (2026): Pros, Cons, Pricing and Who It’s For

What Base44 does well, where people run into limits, what it costs, and how it compares with other AI app builders.

Balram Kapoor

The short verdict: Base44 is one of the fastest ways to get a working web app with logins, a database and hosting, with nothing to set up. It suits internal tools, dashboards, customer portals and simple business apps. It is a weaker fit if you need a real mobile app, want to own your backend, or need costs you can predict: credits run out fast for many users, they expire each month, and the backend stays on Base44.

A note on who's writing: we make GenVibe, another AI app builder, so read this with that in mind. We haven't run a production app on Base44. This review is based on Base44's own pricing page and documentation and on published user reviews, all checked October 14, 2026, and it links to every source.

What Base44 is

Base44 is an AI app builder: you describe an app in a chat, and it builds a working web app with a database, user logins, file storage and hosting included. Maor Shlomo started it in early 2025, and Wix bought it in June 2025. It has grown fast since: Wix reported more than 2 million users by November 2025, and Base44 passed $100 million in yearly recurring revenue by March 2026.

Under the hood, apps are standard React apps (built with Vite) that run as single-page web apps on a free base44.app address. The backend is Base44's own: a MongoDB-compatible database, built-in sign-in, file storage and paid add-ons such as email, AI calls and image generation.

What Base44 does well

  • Everything is built in. Database, logins (email, Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Apple), file storage, hosting, email and AI calls work without connecting any outside service.
  • Fast for non-coders. On Product Hunt (4.4 out of 5), reviewers often praise going from an idea to a working internal tool or dashboard in a single session.
  • A wide choice of AI models. Besides an Auto mode and Base44's own model (Base 1), paid plans from Builder up can pick models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google.
  • It ships quickly. The changelog shows new features almost every week. In 2026 alone: app-store files, plan mode, Superagents, its own AI model and a Mac app.
  • Wix behind it. The company is well funded and isn't going away, and it says it holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certifications.

Where Base44 falls short

  • Credits run out, and don't roll over. There's no fixed cost per message (Base44 says a small edit is about half a credit and an app-wide change 3 to 4), unused credits expire at each reset, and credits aren't refunded for AI mistakes. On the free plan, automatic error fixes use credits too.
  • Key features need the Builder plan ($40–50 a month). Code download, GitHub sync, choosing the AI model, backend functions, Stripe payments and app-store files all start there.
  • Your backend stays on Base44. You can export the frontend and backend function code, and your data as CSV, but not the database, sign-in system or hosting. Exported code still calls Base44's backend through its SDK, and we couldn't find a documented way to run that backend yourself.
  • Mobile apps are web views. The App Store and Google Play files wrap your web app in a web view; there's no native or React Native code, and no in-app purchases yet.
  • Web apps only as single pages. Hosting supports single-page apps only, with no server-side rendering, which matters for content sites that need search traffic.
  • Mixed reviews on billing and support. Trustpilot shows 2.8 out of 5 from 911 reviews, and the common complaints are credits spent on the AI fixing its own mistakes, no refunds, and support handled by bots.

Base44 pricing at a glance

PlanMonthlyYearly (per month)Message credits
Free$0$025 a month (5 a day)
Starter$20$16100
Builder$50$40250
Pro$100$80500
Elite$200$1601,200

Every plan also includes integration credits (100 on Free, 2,000 on Starter), which your app's users spend when they use AI, email or file features. For what each plan adds and what happens when credits run out, see our full Base44 pricing breakdown.

What users say

WhereRatingReviews
Product Hunt4.4 / 541
Google Play (Base44 app)3.9 / 51,878
App Store, US (Base44 app)3.1 / 574
Trustpilot2.8 / 5911

The pattern is consistent across sites. People who praise Base44 built internal tools, dashboards or simple apps quickly and liked having everything in one place. People who complain ran into the AI changing working code and then spending credits to fix it, expected a native mobile app and got a web view, hit limits with more complex logic, or had trouble with cancellations and refunds.

Security record

In July 2025, the security firm Wiz found a flaw that let anyone register on Base44 apps marked private. Base44 fixed it within a day, and Wix said it found no evidence that customers were affected. In August 2025, Imperva disclosed several other flaws, also fixed. Like any app builder, how secure your app is still depends on how its data rules are set up, so check who can read what before you share it.

Credits aren't the same unit across tools, so compare what you get rather than the raw numbers. Base44 is simpler if you never want to touch a database setup. GenVibe is the better fit if you want a real phone app, or you want your database and code to be yours from day one.

Who should use Base44

  • Teams building internal tools, dashboards, CRMs or customer portals quickly.
  • Non-coders who want logins, a database and hosting with no setup at all.
  • People happy to stay on one platform in exchange for convenience.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Anyone who needs a real iPhone or Android app rather than a website in an app shell.
  • Builders who want to own their database and run their app anywhere.
  • Anyone on a tight budget who needs to know in advance what a project will cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is Base44 legit?

Yes. Base44 is owned by Wix, which bought it in June 2025, and it has millions of users: Wix reported over 2 million by November 2025. Reviews are mixed, though: 4.4 out of 5 on Product Hunt but 2.8 on Trustpilot, where the complaints are mostly about credits, billing and support.

Is Base44 free?

There is a free plan with 25 message credits a month (at most 5 a day) and 100 integration credits. It includes logins and a database, but private apps, custom domains and code editing need a paid plan, which starts at $20 a month ($16 billed yearly).

Can Base44 build mobile apps?

Partly. Since February 2026, Base44 can generate App Store and Google Play files on the Builder plan and above, but the app is a wrapper that shows your Base44 web app inside a web view, not native or React Native code. You submit it yourself with your own developer accounts.

Can you export your code from Base44?

On the Builder plan ($50 a month, or $40 yearly) and above, you can download a ZIP or sync with GitHub. The export includes the frontend and backend function code, and your data as CSV, but not the database, logins or hosting: the code still talks to Base44’s backend through its SDK.

Who owns Base44?

Wix. Base44 was started by Maor Shlomo in early 2025, and Wix announced it was buying the company in June 2025 for about $80 million plus earn-out payments.

What is a good Base44 alternative?

It depends on what you need. For a real mobile app plus web apps, with your database in your own Supabase project, GenVibe builds React Native (Expo) and web apps and starts at $12 a month. See our list of the best AI app builders for more options.
